“Roekmini van Jepara” celebrates the life and legacy of Roekmini, Kartini’s often-overlooked sister. Roekmini was a talented artist, dedicated health worker, and relentless educator who devoted her life to the advancement of Javanese society.
This book is inspired by Roekmini’s letters compiled by Joost Coté in 2008, and her paintings discovered by Professor Werner Kraus. Through these works, we aim to present an accessible memoir to honor Roekmini’s productive dedication.
Roekmini and Kartini dreamt of studying in the Netherlands, but their aspirations were thwarted by colonial bureaucracy and conservative Javanese norms. Despite facing numerous obstacles, Roekmini continued to fight for art and education. She played a pivotal role in reviving the traditional Javanese woodcarving industry, which gained international acclaim.
This book reminds us of the importance of big dreams and perseverance. Roekmini’s legacy is an everlasting inspiration, teaching us that the struggle for progress and equality is never in vain.
